I Broke It!

Posted on 02. Jul, 2009 by Andrew in Blogging

Well I’m sure it wasn’t me because I didn’t change anything but something in my WordPress theme has broken. I upgraded to 2.8 a few days back and I saw no issue until just a short time ago.

As you can see the featured posts and top stories have all disappeared. I’ve tracked the problem down to the theme not reading the database. At least thats what I think it is at this stage. There is a setting in the theme to select the category to be used for each of those places but the categories are simply not showing up so that I can select one.

I really can’t say what has happened or even why and I’m not going to start thinking the worst just yet. If its a worst case scenario then my hosting provider will have a lot of explaining to do.

It’s now 1:30 am and I have had enough. I’ll check the logs tomorrow but unfortunatly if I do have a major issue I’ll have to rewrite the posts from today because the backup has not run yet since yesterday.

The moral to this story is, don’t be a scrooge. Get a premium, supported theme that won’t break and if it does then support can fix it.

Till next time.

Happy blogging.

Well I’m glad to say I fixed the immediate issue. Seems some values simply dropped out of the database. I’m not yet completely in the clear though. Some php functions are simply not accessing the database correctly and there is no clear or apparent reason for the error. So I still have a bit of work ahead of me. My biggest concern is exporting only the posts, categories and tags, including the associated post and category ID’s so that I can then rebuild the entire database from scratch.

    Oh well such is life.
