So you’ve been trying to get your content on the front page of Digg but so far things just haven’t worked out. There’s a few reasons why. I’m going to show you what you’re doing wrong and exactly what you’ll need to change so that your content is a regular on the Digg front page.

Just ask yourself, “what would a front page entry on Digg do for my website and my internet marketing business”?

The business of SEO deals with getting free traffic – and lots of it. I talk about SEO a lot on this blog because it is the single most cost effective way to drive massive amounts of free traffic on a long term basis. Digg however can do a whole lot more than any SEO technique and take your website to a whole new level if you know exactly how to get on that elusive front page.

It’s a short term strategy as far as direct traffic goes, but it’ll go a long way to building a good following of regular visitors to a blog, or – if done correctly – driving traffic to a squeeze page to build your email list, or even CPA offers.

Prepare to Digg-Proof Your Site

With a front page Digg entry it’s a given that your going to get more traffic than your server is likely to handle. Literally millions of people could visit your site as a result of a Digg front page appearance. So before you go ahead and start trying out these methods you need to first make sure of 2 important things to ensure success.

Content is key! No this is not the notorious ‘content is king’ advice. I’m saying that you need the right kind of content – the kind of stuff that is popular on Digg. That means informative or offbeat content. Humor is another massively popular topic but there are also many others. I’ll be showing you a simple way to find out what is popular very soon.

Just take note that you’re never going to get a blatant pitch or promotion on Digg’s front page so don’t bother trying. Even worse though is that you’ll have burned any chance of successfully using these methods I’m about to teach you.

Instead you should use things like your web 2.0 properties, your blogs, or other mini and review sites. Create amazing content there. Not a sales page though. You need content that delivers a great message, get’s the reader thinking or interacting, or otherwise entertains or informs. Use this content to connect with the Digger but include some links with amazing headlines (anchor text) pointing to your money site and submit that content instead.

Lets say you’re in the weight loss niche. You find a great article on some new or controversial discovery. You could write your own creative spin on that story with a direction to your product and include a passive call to action at the end of the story. For example ” claim your free trial by visiting this website”. Visitors click the link, are directed to your squeeze page, you build your list.

When you get good enough at this you can even direct people right to your CPA offers with amazing results.

The second thing to ensure is that your server is going to handle the pressure of a massive spike in traffic and resources. Many sites have been unintentionally overloaded and died due to the massive amounts of traffic that will arrive on your site from a front page entry on Digg.

Just remember that if the content is not right for Digg, worrying about the server is the least of your problems. So get laser focused on getting the content right first – worry about the server later.

Understanding The Digg Network

No matter how you look at it, Digg is a social network as much as any other. Just like Facebook, MySpace, and all the others, there is a ‘friend network’ where members of the community interact with each other, comment on each others submissions, act upon their peers recommendations (in the form of digg’s) etc. As you can see, Digg fundamentally works exactly the same way as other social networks.

In many ways Digg is very much like the Twitter community. Just as with Twitter, when you interact with the Digg community you have to ensure that you use some amount of restraint and etiquette. And just like Twitter, Digg has it’s power users. In any social network, power users tend to carry with them a great deal of influence. Tapping into that influence is the the secret ingredient with any social network marketing.

Connecting With Digg Power Users

So the key to success with Digg and getting on the front page in fact has more to do with who you are connected to than how amazing your content is. I’m not saying that crap content will make it through all the check points and onto the Digg front page, but you certainly don’t need to be the Huffington Post to make it there.

Average content, that is considered worth digging by just a few of the right people is enough to get your site onto the Digg front page. But like all social networks, the real trick is who to connect with and how to find them. Once you know how to connect with the right people, you’re going to need them to notice you and Digg your submissions.

Obviously there is a lot to discuss here, and I want to make sure this information is delivered to you in manageable chunks. So I’ve decided to break this post up into several parts.

Coming up next I’m going to give you the complete lowdown on exactly how to locate and identify the right people to connect with. Following that I’ll to teach you exactly how to use Digg so that you build a massive network of influential people who will virtually guarantee your content makes it to the the front page of Digg – on virtual auto pilot.

If you haven’t already, make sure you subscribe to the RSS feed so that you don’t miss a single piece of this puzzle.

Why do almost all SEO methods work for some people and not others? It’s all in the details. There are 3 critical and often overlooked things that everyone needs to know about SEO that will ensure you get the best rankings possible, higher click through rates, and no penalties.

Search Engine Optimization is like an art form. Like all great arts, understanding what’s required to shine far above the crowd is by far the most important thing to learn. Many will attempt to make a career from their respective arts, but only a small few will ever have any real success.

The same can be said for SEO. The big difference though is that the SEO stage is much larger and can accommodate a much larger cast. Making it big in the art of SEO is far more achievable.

The one thing that remains the same for both is the reason why those few are so successful. The answer is actually much more simple than you’d expect.

It’s because in both cases, the artist understands why some things are more important than others. When it comes to SEO there are many myths about what is important and what isn’t. Working out the facts is often time consuming and tedious.

So I’ve gathered up all the best information and found the 3 things you should know about SEO to get the best rankings and traffic possible.

1. Competition is Good, Improves Profitability Outlook

You might be thinking I’m completely crazy but have absolutely no doubt that competition is not something to run away from. Ask yourself this: Would I rather be targeting keywords that have few searches, and fewer buyers? Or would I prefer to target phrases that have high traffic volumes with people who are already selling products and services?

If people are searching for it, then give them what they want. If a lot of people are trying to rank for it, GREAT! It means that it’s a profitable place. Where there is competition, there is cash.

You can try to be a trail blazer and go after all the hyper-extended long tail phrases to find that one gem that no one has found yet. Good luck with that. It makes far more sense to find what the people want, and give it to them.

Competition tells us one very clear message. That people want it, and others are having success providing it. No matter if your trying to sell a product, build a list, or simply drive traffic to a landing page or blog. High competition tells you what the people want and which phrases to go after.

2. Content Is No Longer King

If you didn’t think I was crazy before you will now. Content might be king for blogs, for building readership, and RSS subscribers but that’s where that magic stops. Your content will still need to be compelling and entertaining enough to engage and connect with your readers, but content is not what got them to visit. When it comes to SEO your content is no longer king.

Headlines That Attract Searchers, and Drive More Traffic!

Your headline is 100 times more important to SEO, and visits for that matter, than anything else. The only way to attract visitors is to have compelling and attention grabbing headlines. The page and blog title is your short form headline. Whereas your description is the long form, or extended version of your headline.

In both cases, it won’t matter if you get a first place ranking in the SERPs, if your headlines suck, you might as well be on page 100 because no one will be clicking through to your site.

So trying to pound more keywords or even trying to write titles for keywords rather than titles that attract people, is wasting a lot of time and effort. Try writing your headlines to grab attention and see if you can fit your keywords in so that it reads naturally without diluting the headline.

If you need help on writing great headlines that almost always work check out this series How to Write Magnetic Headlines on CopyBlogger. I know it’s a little older, but the information is as current today as when it was written.

3. Canonicalization Done Right Gets Site Out of Sin Bin.

Canonicalization, or having only one version of your site available to the spiders, has been talked about to no end. I won’t just rehash tired old information. If you need to learn about canonicalization you can read this article by Matt Cutts. But I still see people making one major mistake that effectively destroys all of their other efforts.

If you don’t get it right the search engines, particularly Google, will view your site as one big pot of duplicate content stew. The reason is because most CMS systems, webmasters, and blog platforms will at some point reference your default page, instead of your default site.

This means that your home page, the one that has all that link juice from those inbound domain links, has 2 URL’s indexed that point to the exact same page. Here’s an example:

Joe Blog is working to fix his canonicalization on his blog. He sets his Google Webmaster tools to prefer the www version of his site. For good measure he uses a .htaccess file to set a 301 redirect for any non www request to be forwarded to his www version of his site.

Joe Blog then decides to install a pluging that uses some PHP code to call the default page. Since the default page is index.php the URL generated is http://www.joeblogs.ext/index.php which is the same page as http://www.joeblogs.ext. This now leaves him with a duplicate content issue on the home page.

The simple solution is to add a 301 redirect and forward any requests for any part of the site calling index.php to redirect to the same location without the index.php in the url. Do you have a 301 on your default page?

This might seem a little ‘newbie’ but just checking around some sites I can see just how many people are making this horrible mistake. When you think about it, an entire site could be penalized simply by overlooking this important but subtle change. And it’s like…newbie…information.

Take some time and focus on some of the finer details on your site. SEO is a complex animal, and making these 3 simple changes to your blog might just be what you’ve been looking for.

Do you track your visitors? Do you know which social sites are responsible for driving the most, and the most targeted traffic to your website or blog?

I’ve been very busy over the past week. Some of my work has included researching the most popular, valuable and effective bookmarking sites that drive real, quality traffic to blogs and websites.

Let me tell you that it hasn’t been an easy task. With more than 200 notable social bookmarking sites being talked about across the interwebs, none, other than Digg, StumbleUpon, Technorati and a couple of others seems to stand out.

It seems that, while millions of people are very actively using the many social bookmarking sites to promote their own and other sites content, there is no real quantifiable data on which sites outside of the top 5 are the clear winners when it comes to driving top quality traffic.

I’d like to ask you to help out by voting on this poll. We are simply asking you to answer which of the listed sites brings you the most traffic. Choose up to 3 answers.

If you know of a site that is not listed but should be on the list, leave us a comment and let us know about it.

Once I have gathered enough useful data, I’ll write a post and discuss the findings.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

What is the biggest problem when you start a new blog or website?

If you look at most of the blogs of professional (what I call A-List) bloggers, judging from the comments, it’s getting traffic to come to your blog, read your posts and subscribe to your feed. Blog traffic is even more difficult to get when you decide to enter into a very competitive niche like make money blogging, make money online or any other variation of make money like I have.

We’ve all read the countless posts, ebooks and listened to the pitches about SEO, comments, dofollow, link building etc. etc. and every single one of these methods are the tactics and strategies that are geared for the long term. The problem is that you want traffic right now. You want to see page views and unique visitor numbers increase dramatically.

I have a few strategies that I use when I see traffic fall into a ditch but there is one tactic that works above all others when you want to drive traffic to your blog today. I’ll share this killer tactic with you on the condition that once you’ve read this post, you to take immediate action and put this tactic to work right away. Then come back and report on how it went.

This tactic, however must be used with both caution and some discretion because your credibility is paramount to your online success and if you use this powerful traffic generating tactic without putting some thought into it you will almost certainly lose your credibility and possibly worse. So I can’t stress enough how important it is that you read the entire post and fully understand this method before you implement it for yourself.

So what is this magic secret tactic that I use to drive traffic to my site? Hold on there, don’t all the gurus show you the proof and the traffic charts first? I get a bit lazy sometimes so I didn’t get my Google webmaster data I just used the data from WP-Stats but for the purpose of this post its good enough and just as relevant.

So now take a look at this graph of my page view stats for the month of July. The start of the month looks promising but then it dies off. I write some good posts and promote them a little through the social networks but not much seems to happen. Then all of a sudden in the middle of the month BAM! Page views increase. They die off for a couple more days then through the roof again. Even that last dip, which was during this last weekend still has more page views than at the start of the month. Interesting stuff right?

And what was it that created this spike in traffic? What is my secret ingredient you ask?

Controversy!!!

Yep it’s that simple. You’re probably wondering how on earth I can use controversy to increase traffic to my blog to that scale.

First I’ll explain what happened in the middle of the month to get that fist spike. It begins on July 16th. So what happened on July 16th?

John Chow gets back into Google. I used that to my advantage but I did in a clever way, and also in a way that (I hope) didn’t offend John. So here’s how I did it.

When John got back into Google the internet was ablaze with stories about it. But I focused on the 2 most prominent stories. One being at johnchow.com and the other at shoemoney.com. These two sites are where the bulk of the traffic would be and where I could steal divert it from.

All I really did was give my own opinion, which most people wouldn’t do in fear of falling out of favor with those very famous and influencial people. Personally I don’t care that much about it. I’m not try to go out of my way to upset people, but I will take advantage of a situation when I know that I can fire up peoples emotions. I also know that John Chow doesn’t know me and couldn’t give a hoot about me but was polite enough to respond to my comments.

To get an idea of how fired up some people actually got about what I had to say go, have a read of the comments at Johns site [John Chow Gives In To Google-Back In Search Engine] and also at Shoemoney [Google Gives in To John Chow; Proves Ends Justify The Means]. I then kept the momentum going by writing my own post about it with Has John Chow Lost His Edge? Then I publicly announced on Johns site that I had written the post but I didn’t link to it.

It’s probably worth noting that I didn’t link to my own post because I didn’t want to come off as a troll or a spammer. Johns site also uses the commentluv plugin so the post showed up on my comments anyway.

If you read that post, you can see I didn’t insult, degrade, abuse, or belittle anyone but I did go against the common consensus that John had triumphed over Google. I did this because I knew it would get a reaction but as I said, also because I meant what I said.

The reaction I’d anticipated was that people would follow the link and take a look for one of several reasons. Either they wanted to know what I had written and get my perspective, or they wanted to know ‘who the hell is this knob’. To me it didn’t matter because they were instantly introduced to me and my blog. Most of the traffic came from John Chows site but a fair amount also came from Shoemoney.

I won’t know for some time to come, but I also hope that I have gained even just a small amount of respect from John for having the balls to speak my mind and to show myself to be a leader and not a follower (or a kiss ass as I more affectionately call it).

For the rest of that week traffic continued to flow into my site, accompanied by multiple page views of all of my posts, in fact there wasn’t a single post that didn’t get a look at during that week.

So what about the second spike? Well the second spike, that really big one in the middle, I can’t really share with you just yet because I still have more experimenting to do. But that third spike is another example of the controversy tactic.

This one was even better as the graph clearly shows and currently there is no sign of it slowing down. I just hope that this one lasts a bit longer. In fact in the time it took between that screen shot and writing this post it just continued to climb up to the heavens.

Last week Perry Belcher released his Social Media Money product. Now for those who are unaware, last year Perry was arrested, pleaded guily and had more than $1Million dollars worth of cash and assets confiscated. It was headline news both online and off. The charges were based on internet fraud. You can watch Perry Belchers confession on his blog and do your own research into it.

Anyway, there are a lot of people who absolutely hate Perry now. Personally I don’t know him, don’t love him, and don’t hate him. The bloke got greedy, screwed up, paid the price, and has moved on to new things.

My attitude is leave him be and give him a chance to show us that he’s learned from his mistakes. But I also knew there were loads of people who had not moved on and so I waited for an opportunity to present itself to drive more traffic to my blog.

It came via twitter. Another fantastic marketer who I won’t name out of respect, made a very clever post, using some great copy writing tactics which basically killed any reputation that Perry may have built up for, what seemed to me to be, a personal gain. More power to him for being clever enough to see the opportunity and take action.

All I needed to do was read the post and make some comments. Now my comments in this case were probably not very well articulated and I realised in hindsight that I could have done a much better job. Basically all I did was take certain points of the post and challenge them with my own views. Views that I knew would not be openly accepted.

My excuse for not articulating it well is that it was 2am when I posted my comments.

I then did little Google search and found other similar posts. One particular post was by what I can only describe as a ranting raving lunatic with an axe to grind and a following of readers. I decided to get up in his face about his accusations about Perry Belcher. In all honesty some of what he was saying was true but most of it was simply a Blecher bashing.

So conversations went on for about 4 days. The blog that these comments were made on is not a blog that I care much about so when my IP was finally blocked (which I had anticipated) it came as no surprise and didn’t affect me in any way. This one though had a very significant and welcome side effect.

As the blog owner got more passionate with his arguments he started to search out anything he could possibly find out about me. Then he made a post with a multitude of links back to several of my blog post, as well as several of my twitter posts. The best part of all this is that his blog has a good PR value and is in a related niche to mine. He even used some great anchor text for the links and didn’t even realise what he was doing at the time.

BONUS! Free link love.

The blog owner felt really clever and satisfied in his tirade and attempts to expose something about me and I got 6 free backlinks from a relevant site with good PR. How do you like that for a double whammy?

Warning! This is something to be very careful with. It could get you in a lot of trouble if you are clumsy about it.

First and foremost you must understand that what I write in these confronting and challenging posts is from the heart, is my honest opinion, and is completely my own perspective. I wouldn’t attempt to do this just for the sake of it. Rather I must have a genuine opinion about it and if you try this you should too. Otherwise you’ll just come off looking like a troll or a spammer or maybe worse, you could get sued for defamation or libel.

Back to the topic at hand. If you look at that graph again you can clearly see that once the traffic started coming in they keep coming back. And let me take this opportunity to say a warm welcome to all my new and recent visitors, readers and commenters. It’s great having you hear in our little community.

Some guidelines for this tactic that you must follow if you want to avoid legal trouble.

Don’t personally attack people. Challenge people but don’t verbally confront them.

Give an honest opinion and try to be as objective as possible. Be passionate, but don’t get emotionally attached.

Be polite and if you are confronted, thank the person for their own opinion.

NEVER make direct or indirect accusations that could be construed as statements of fact unless you have absolute proof to support you accusation.

Be prepared for some negative attention as well but remember that even bad publicity is still publicity.

If you act with caution, creativity and courtesy you can use this simple but effective tactic to drive traffic to your site instantly from just about any place on the internet almost on command. Be sure you don’t make a habit of this or you will probably lose out in the end. Remember that this is a short term strategy to get traffic flowing bringing potential loyal readers of your blog, and should also be some good link bait if done correctly. In the case of Perry Belcher I already had a post in place 2 days in advance that was used to link back to.

Finally I want to say a big thanks to John Chow, Jeremy Shoemaker, my unnamed friend (you know who you are) and my new found lunatic friend who will no doubt be visiting me regularly to see if he can dig up any dirt on me.

So now that you know my little secret killer traffic driving strategy what’s your take on it? Do you have the courage to use it? For those of you that do, make sure you come back and let me know how it turned out for you.

Happy blogging.

So you’ve started a home based business or became an affiliate or other online marketer and you did the traditional thing. You went and loaded your entire marketing budget into Google and Yahoo PPC advertising and you quickly burned through the cash without getting any new leads or converting a single visitor into a sale.

So now what?

Marketing online can be an absolute minefield and you either know how to step over those mines to leverage your marketing dollars with PPC or you leave a very crater. Usually in your bank account. People spend thousands of dollars on SOE and PPC in an attempt to attract traffic, and ultimately conversions and see very little or no return on investment.

That why free advertising methods are going to be your best friend. Some of the most effective online marketing strategies, particularly for home based businesses and affiliate marketers are the sources of free advertising. Lets face it, online marketing is all about traffic, traffic and more traffic. But if that traffic costs you $1000 and you’ve only made $45 in profit then all the traffic in the world won’t help you.

So what are the top 3 most effective ways to drive traffic to your website without spending money?

1. Artilcles

Writing articles and having them published on article submission websites can be one of the most valuable sources of free advertising your could wish for. If your home business is running on a tight budget this is a sure fire way to increase the amount of traffic coming to your website. And the effect is 3 fold.

First off you have the opportunity to promote your website and your product. Secondly you have the ability to write your article to passively target your own keywords and keyword terms. Finally you article links to your website will be indexed by most of the search engines and, on the basis that your website has good relevant content, can help to improve you search result rankings. Even if you are not a writer, if you use your imagination, and chose a topic that is both relevant to your product/website and one that you are passionate about, you will find that article writing is really not all that difficult.

2. Social networking

If you haven’t heard of social networking by now its time you got with the program. Social networking today is probably the most popular form of online activity that any population in any demographic is involved in. And it doesn’t get much simpler. With so many options to chose from MySpace, FaceBook, Twitter, Ask, etc. are some of the most active websites in use today and if your not taking advantage of it then you could be missing out on literally hundreds even thousands of visitors. If your not yet connected with at least one of these networking sites then your really missing out on a massive peice of the pie. And we didn’t even talk about YouTube, but we’ll leave that for an article all on its own.

3. Blogging

Blogging started out as a simple alternative to personal websites and social networking. Today the plethora of available blog sites and their alternatives is mind boggling as is the number of individual and business blogs. For a home based business its a perfect medium for attracting prospects to your website. The best part about blogging is the ability to have your blog linked to all of your social networking sites. I used to loath blogging until the day I realised its power and the reach that it has for promoting my own home business. With tools such as onlywire you now can manage all of your articles and social networks all from within your blog with a single click. Simply write your blog article, bookmark it with only wire and have it show up at all your social networking sites. Remember that Google loaths duplicate content, you simply rewrite that article and check its uniquness before submitting it to an article directory. You now have unique content on each of your sites, with back links from all of your social networking platforms as well as a fantastic article giving you massive exposure. My personal favorite, mostly because its free is DupeFreePro. When rewriting your article this software will not only check your own two versions for uniquness, it will also perform a web discovery checking content that is similar to your own. This amazing little tool can even perform a keyword phrase trageting analysis for you on the fly.

These are just 3 of the available methods available to you when your new home business is on a real budget and your looking for an opportunity to make money from your efforts. The exposure your website will have is immeasurable (but thanks to tracking software we can still measure it).

With a little bit of creativity you can begin driving huge amounts of traffic to your site, improve your site search ranking, all in the same shot.

What’s the one thing that most Internet marketing people have trouble getting? Yes, that’s right — traffic. I have sweet ways that you can get traffic and be assured that it’s killer traffic, the kind that will help you to make sales 24/7.

Don’t try to do this with free traffic. Some free traffic can be good, like search engine optimization traffic, but generally banner exchanges, traffic exchanges, and the like won’t get the people to you that want to buy. If you have a really obscure niche, you’ll find that not many of your customers go to those places, and it’s just not the kind of traffic you need.

The most efficient way to get targeted, free traffic is by working with others in your Internet marketing niche. Here are some examples:

Targeted traffic is what makes all the difference. That’s why search engine traffic works, because when someone searches for something, they’re looking for something very specific, and the best kind of targeted traffic you can get, though still free, is by working with other people in your niche.

One great way to find targeted customer is with teleseminars. When you hold a call with someone in your niche, the people who sign up for the calls are looking for that information. They’re already interested in what you have to sell. For example, if you’re in the health and beauty Internet marketing niche, and you hold a call with a prestigious hairdresser, people will come on the call to hear what that person has to say. At the end of the call, they’ll also buy products from them and you’ll make money selling them through your affiliate link. It’s very likely that since you’re in the same niche, that people will come to your website and buy your products and services, too. You already have their names and addresses captured because you used a squeeze page to sign them up for the calls.

Joint venturing in that way is great, but you can also do joint ventures with mailings. Let’s take the same partner above. He mails out to his list about your product and you mail out to your list about his, each using the other’s affiliate links so that you both make money.

The third kind of joint venturing is “Golden Rule” traffic. That comes when you exchange emails with someone in your Internet marketing niche. You put two messages from your autoresponder series into hers and she puts two messages of hers into yours. This can bring in tons of great free traffic that is targeted to your Internet marketing niche.

Another kind of joint venturing was coined by Mark Joyner as “integration marketing.” Here, you integrate your marketing message into someone else’s sales process. For example, you give a partner in your Internet marketing niche a squeeze page to use as their “thank you” page after someone opts into their autoresponder series. This is a great way to make sales to targeted customers, as well.

These are just great ways to find traffic for your Internet marketing website, mostly free traffic, but the right kind of free traffic. If you look for people in your niche and work with them, you’ll both come out ahead.
